Genetic Improvement

Genetic improvement and development of good production systems have improved the productive performance and competitiveness of different species. In the past 50 years , the efficiency of distinguishing between desirable and undesirable players has been developed , which dramatic changes in the productive performance of farm animals have been described .

This tool has been applied to aquaculture species by CENIACUA , which has managed to develop excellent genetic lines for growth and disease resistance in P. vannamei . Further improvement in shrimp CENIACUA , has entered its research on fish such as tilapia and ultimately conducts studies in marine fish.

Shrimp Genetic

  • CENIACUA began the domestication of P. vannamei production under closed-loop ( Gautier , 2002). Given the excellent results of closed cycle and the need for genetic material of high yield was implemented and developed a breeding program based on the combined selection.

Since the program's inception to date there have been 29 lots corresponding to 10 generations of selection, which have been evaluated for growth and survival in farm.
Genetic gain generation in breeding nucleus was estimated 4.2 % , 5.7 % , 6.0 % and 1.7% for growth, survival and resistance pond TSV and WSSV respectively. Due to the low heritability of resistance to white spot virus 4 years mass selection program develops CENIACUA facilities in the Colombian Pacific Coast.

    Tilapia Genetic

    • This program combined selection ( family and individual selection ) started in 2007. It aims at increasing the productive variables : growth , survival, and performance of the fillet. In order to improve the competitiveness of Tilapia nilotica cultivation in Colombia .

The town was built from a system of complete diallel cross using 7 populations from different areas of the country, hoping to have the maximum genetic variability. A large effect -breeding was found , showing heterosis of 14 % and 36 % for weight at harvest, for this same character a heritability of 0.23 and 0.11 for male female ratio was estimated . Genetic correlations between environments were positive and of different magnitudes.
